Tropical Storm Bertha Heads Out to Sea

Tropical Storm Bertha headed out to the North Atlantic Tuesday after pounding Bermuda with heavy winds and torrential rains, leaving thousands there without power.

Bertha was moving northeast at 12 mpg Tuesday morning about 380 miles off the Bermuda coast and was expected to track southeast before turning back towards the northeast.

On July 7, Bertha became the Atlantic season’s first hurricane, but was downgraded to a tropical storm days later. It is expected to re-strengthen into a hurricane on Wednesday, according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center.

Bertha’s top sustained winds had increased to 70 mph. Tropical storms are reclassified as hurricanes when wind speeds reach 74 mp.

Bertha is already the longest-lived July tropical storm since records began in 1851, a potentially ominous signal that this six-month Atlantic hurricane season could be a busy one.
