Taiwan Recovering after Tropical Storm Causes Flash Floods, Landslides, Killing 7

A tropical storm pounded southern Taiwan with torrential rains Friday, causing landslides and flash floods that killed 7 and washed six others away.

The Central Weather Bureau reported Tropical Storm Kalmaegi began battering parts of the south late Thursday evening. By Friday, heavy rains had caused flooding in many areas of southern Taiwan. More than 44 inches of rain were recorded over a 24-hour period.

Official reported that water supplies to more than 650,000 households were cut off even as the storm was heading away from Taiwan. Southern China could begin to see the effects of the storm, packing winds of 52 miles per hour, later on Friday.
