Hurricane Dolly Expected to Cause Flooding in Texas
Tropical storm Dolly upgraded to hurricane strength Wednesday as it headed towards Texas and Mexico. Winds are expected to reach 100 km/h before Hurricane Dolly reaches landfall Wednesday.
“There are some pretty strong gusting winds coming from east to west. I’m told theses winds new are about 70 to 75 km/h and it’s going to get much worse, probably 100 km/h, before the worst comes to this area,” said CNN’s Sean Callebs.
Callebs said disaster officials are worried about the Rio Grande Valley as many of the flood levees there are in disrepair. “They’re worried if so much rain falls on that area near the river it could damage those levees compromise their integrity and lead to widespread flooding,” he added.
Hurricane warnings were issued for Brownsville and Corpus Christi, Texas. Fourteen counties in Texas have been declared disaster areas. Dolly may upgrade from a category 1 hurricane to a category 2.
