Evacuations Ordered as Hurricane Earl Approaches Coast

Mandatory evacuations were ordered Wednesday for Okracoke Island and Cape Lookout National Seashore in North Carolina as Hurricane Earl approaches the coast. Though Earl was downgraded to a category 3 storm on Wednesday, forecasters warned the storm’s strength could fluctuate over the next 48 hours.

A hurricane watch has been issued for parts of the North Carolina coast up to Parramore Island in Virginia. Tracking maps show Earl reaching North Carolina early Friday morning. As of 5 a.m. Wednesday, Earl had winds near 125 mph and was located about 815 miles south-southeast of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina. The storm is moving northwest at 26 mph.
