Hurricane Earl Reaches North Carolina’s Outer Banks

Hurricane Earl had weakened to a category 2 storm by the time it brushed the Outer Banks in North Carolina Thursday night. Heavy winds and rain pounded the area. Earl sent high waves crashing over dunes. Portions of the main state highway in Outer Banks were flooded. There have been no reports of causalities or severe damages.

The National Hurricane Center reported the center of Earl was about 85 miles east of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina at 5 a.m. Friday. Earl is headed north-northeast at about 18 mph with maximum sustained winds of 105 mph.

The storm is expected weaken to a category 1 storm by the time it approaches New England tonight. Earl is forecast to make direct landfall over southern Nova Scotia Saturday morning.

Warnings and watches have been issued for areas up the east coast, including Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket in Massachusetts.

"An increase in forward speed and a turn toward the northeast are expected in the next 12 to 24 hours. On the forecast track ... the center of Earl will move away from the North Carolina Outer Banks today ... and will approach southeastern New England tonight,” the National Hurricane Center said.
