Steel Dynamics (STLD) is the nation’s fifth largest producer of carbon steel products with 2009 annual revenues of $4.0 billion on steel shipments of 4.0 million tons. Based in Fort Wayne, Indiana, SDI employs about 6,000 and operates five electric-furnace mini-mills. Over half of the company's steel shipments are flat-rolled steel and the remainder is "long products" (bars and beams) and fabricated products. SDI is among the most profitable American steel companies in terms of profit margins and operating profit per ton.

In October 2007 Steel Dynamics acquired OmniSource Corporation, one of the country's largest ferrous scrap processors and the largest nonferrous metals processor. OmniSource, also based in Fort Wayne, operates metals recycling facilities at over 70 locations in the Midwest and the southeastern U.S. About half of the ferrous scrap consumed by SDI's three Indiana mills is now supplied by Omnisource. OmniSource also continues to supply ferrous and nonferrous metals to many external customers.

Founded in 1993, SDI began production at its Butler, Indiana, Flat Roll Mill in 1996. This state-of-the-art mill remains a world leader in its productivity and in mini-mill production of flat-rolled steels. The Flat Roll Division’s finishing facilities at Butler and at Jeffersonville, Indiana, produce pickled, cold-rolled, galvanized, and painted flat-roll steel. In 2007 SDI acquired The Techs, three galvanizing plants in Pittsburgh that coat flat-rolled steel.

In 2002 Steel Dynamics expanded its product mix to include long products with the production of wide-flange beams at the new mill at Columbia City, Indiana. In 2006 Steel Dynamics acquired Roanoke Electric Steel Corporation, including Steel of West Virginia, adding merchant bar and specialty steels. In addition, SDI produces engineered bar steel (SBQ) at its mini-mill near Indianapolis. The company operates a steel fabrication business, New Millennium Building Systems, producing joists, girders, and decking for non-residential construction projects.

Steel Dynamics’ rapid growth has resulted from discovering and taking advantage of business opportunities in our areas of technical and operational expertise. We attract creative and committed people who are given the challenge and the freedom to implement our business plans, and we reward them well for their successful efforts.
