Hurricane Gustav Could Hit Haiti as Category 2

Hurricane Gustav, currently churning as a Category 1 storm with sustained winds of 85 mph, could strengthen into a Category 2 hurricane by the time it strikes the southern coast of Haiti.

According to the National Hurricane Center Haiti could be hit by Gustav within the next 24 hours and if it strikes as a Category 2 hurricane it could devastate the impoverished country, especially if it makes landfall near the capital city of Port-au-Prince where an estimated 3 million Haitians live.

Haiti lies directly in Hurricane Gustav’s path and is expected to target Cuba on Wednesday with Jamaica already upgrading a tropical storm watch to a hurricane watch.
