We would like to highlight Capstone Turbine Corp. (NASDAQ: CPST). The company develops, manufactures, markets and services microturbine technology solutions for use in stationary distributed power generation applications, including cogeneration (combined heat and power (CHP) and combined cooling, heat and power (CCHP), resource recovery and secure power. Its microturbines can be used as generators for hybrid electric vehicle applications and allow customers to produce power onsite.

In the company’s recent news,

Capstone Turbine Corp. announced two orders for its UPSource product totaling more than $1.3 million, to be delivered to Arlington, Virginia, and Houston, Texas.

The UPSource Secure Power product addresses spatial issues, and is designed and priced to be competitive in the Tier II – IV data center as the main source for IT power. Previous power options were large systems with diesel generators, which required hundreds of batteries and weighed thousands of pounds. Data centers then had to dispose of the thousands of tons of waste lead, copper and battery acids in an environmentally safe manner, which could be time-consuming and expensive.

“Instead of an air-conditioned room with rows of batteries on raised floors periodically used to provide emergency back-up, Capstone’s UPSource Secure Power product uses multiple highly reliable, natural-gas fueled microturbines that provide continuous power independent of the electric utility,” Jim Crouse, Capstone’s executive vice president of Sales and Marketing stated in the press release. “The turbines offer digital power electronics that deliver quality power and can be placed outside, which means no extra construction costs and easy access.”

Secure Power requires less maintenance and less cost, and provides greater safety than traditional UPS battery systems. The UL 2200 and UL 1731 turbines contain no hazardous materials, eliminating the chance for indoor explosive-gas buildup that sometimes occurs in batteries. Each turbine has only one moving part, uses no fluids, is almost maintenance-free, and is designed to run continuously for more than 40,000 hours before any maintenance is scheduled.

“On average, Secure Power is 20 percent less expensive than traditional UPS in N + 1 requirements. Cost savings come from Secure Power’s extremely low maintenance and operational costs. Natural gas is less expensive to use in day-to-day operations than utility electricity, and Secure Power’s 100 percent up-time means more production time,” Darren Jamison, president and CEO stated.
