Hurricane Gustav has continued to gain strength and is in line to hit Cuba as a potentially devastating Category 3 storm later on Saturday.
More than 13,000 residents and thousands of tourists have been ordered out of low-lying areas around Pinar del Rio and Isla Juventud along the western tip of the island as well as the capital city of Havana.
While windows were being boarded and transportation to and from Havana was suspended the threat of extreme storm surges and torrential rains has Cuba more concerned with human life rather than businesses and buses.
Hurricane Gustav began its destructive path in Haiti and the Dominican Republic earlier this week where it was blamed for more than 80 deaths and another four deaths were reported in Jamaica when Gustav passed through.
Meteorologists have predicted Hurricane Gustav will enter the Gulf of Mexico and continue gaining strength as it barrels its way towards the U.S. Gulf Coast and could become a Category 4 or 5 before making landfall.
Already mass evacuations are being planned for residents living in south Texas to Florida
