Hurricane Gustav is expected to make landfall on the U.S. Gulf Coast Monday and New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin has ordered a mandatory curfew for the city that will take place from sunset to dawn, ahead of the impending storm.
Hundreds of thousands have already evacuated their homes along the coast from south Texas to northern Florida in preparation for Hurricane Gustav.
Meteorologists have predicted Gustav could hit as a Category 4 or even 5 as it continues to gain strength in the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico.
While thousands have left their homes there are still many who remain in New Orleans, determined to ride the storm out. That decision has been criticized by city officials who have reminded residents of the destruction caused by Hurricane Katrina three years ago.
In that storm three-quarters of the city was flooded and nearly 2,000 were killed.
Hurricane Gustav has been blamed for more than 80 deaths in Haiti, the Dominican Republic and Jamaica.
