Hurricane Ike turned into an “extremely dangerous” storm Thursday sustaining winds around 135 Mph, according to the US National Hurricane Center. Ike upgraded to a category 4 hurricane on the 5 level Saffir-Simpson scale and was located 610 miles northeast of the Leeward Islands as of this morning.
“Ike becomes an extremely dangerous category four hurricane,” the Hurricane Center said in an advisory.
Ike was moving over the Atlantic at 17 mph away from land. The center said it is too early to tell if “any land areas might eventually be affected.”
