Haiti Devastated by String of Storms as More than 600,000 Left Displaced

In less than three weeks the country of Haiti has been pounded by two tropical storms and a hurricane, leaving the impoverished nation in a state of catastrophe and displacing more than 600,000 citizens.

Severe flooding has swamped large areas of Haiti as Tropical Storm Fay struck Hispaniola in August, Hurricane Gustav followed, dumping more rain on an already soaked land and Tropical Storm Hanna recently passed over forcing residents to abandon the little they had left from the first two storms and head for shelters.

Much of Haiti’s hillsides have been stripped due to mining, making the country prone to severe flooding and mudslides whenever a tropical storm hits.

Coupled with the destroyed homes and businesses is a devastated agricultural sector that has seen much of its farmland swallowed by the flooding.

Now the country is in dire need of safe drinking water as much of the supply has been compromised by the rising waters carrying animal carcasses and disease.

The UN has begun efforts to distribute humanitarian aid but the process has been difficult with access to flooded areas being extremely limited.
