Harris County in Texas Issues Mandatory Evacuation for Hurricane Ike

Harris County in Texas has called for a mandatory evacuation of several zip codes in the Houston metropolitan area in preparation for Hurricane Ike.

The ZIP codes included in the mandatory evacuation are 77058, 77059, 77062, 77520, 77546, 77571, 77586, and 77598. Anyone living in these ZIP codes are asked to be out of their homes by noon Thursday, allowing time for those in coastal counties to evacuate first.

The Houston Independent School District has canceled all Friday classes, adding to the already canceled school activities scheduled for Saturday and Sunday.

Texas officials warn the evacuated Zones A and B in Harris County face a storm surge of up to 15 feet as Hurricane Ike approaches the Texas coast, which is expected to cause massive floods.

Hurricane Ike is currently a Category 2 hurricane, according to the National Hurricane Center and the Saffir-Simpson scale. However, it is expected to reach speeds of 120 mph, becoming a Category 3, when it hits lands on Friday, according to its projected path.

Its projected path is expected to hit between Corpus Christi and the city of Houston, but it is unsure what exact direction it will venture to once it hits land.
