Geron Corporation (Nasdaq: GERN) $5.80. Today announced the publication of preclinical data demonstrating that the company’s telomerase inhibitor drug, imetelstat (GRN163L), currently in Phase 2 clinical trials, targets cancer stem cells from multiple myeloma, pancreatic and breast cancers.
Cancer stem cells, found in many types of cancer, are rare populations of malignant cells with the capacity for endless self-renewal. They are believed to be responsible for tumor growth, recurrence and metastasis. Their resistance to chemotherapy and conventional anti-cancer agents make them important targets for novel therapies.
What They Do: Geron is developing first-in-class biopharmaceuticals for the treatment of cancer and chronic degenerative diseases, including spinal cord injury, heart failure and diabetes.
DryShips Inc. (Nasdaq: DRYS) $5.14 Today announced that its fully-owned subsidiary Ocean Rig UDW Inc. has received a Letter of Intent for the Eirik Raude from a British exploration company. The Letter of Intent is for a two well contract for exploration drilling offshore the Falkland Islands for a period of about 90 days, commencing in the fourth quarter of 2011, immediately after the completion of the current contract. The contract value is approximately USD 77 million. There are three further optional wells that could extend the contract by 135 days. The contract is subject to final documentation.
What They Do: DryShips Inc., based in Greece, is an owner and operator of drybulk carriers and offshore oil deep water drilling units that operate worldwide.
NCI, Inc. (Nasdaq: NCIT) $21.93. Today announced that it has been awarded a task order under the NETCENTS contract with a value of approximately $5.9 million, if all options are exercised, to manage the ground network interface for senior-level airborne assets to provide the connectivity to the Department of Defense’s Global Information Grid. This is the award NCI referenced on its November 3, 2010 conference call.
Under this task order, NCI and its team member, Global Defense Technology & Systems, Inc. (GTEC), will provide Command, Control, and Communications (C3) services support for the 89th Communications Squadron and the Global Network Operations Center. The task order has a one-year base and one option year, and represents new work for NCI.
What They Do: NCI is a leading provider of information technology (IT), engineering, logistics, and professional services and solutions to U.S. Federal Government agencies.
