Pacific Biosciences of California (Nasdaq: PACB) $13.00. Announced Thursday after market close along with Harvard Medical School that they have successfully employed single molecule, real-time (SMRT) DNA sequencing technology to rapidly characterize the pathogen responsible for the recent deadly cholera epidemic in Haiti. Published online Thursday in the New England Journal of Medicine, the results provide the first whole genome sequence analysis and most detailed genetic profile to date of the Haitian Vibrio cholerae outbreak strain.
The multi-strain sequencing and bioinformatic analysis confirm that the cholera pathogen now present in Haiti is closely related to the “El Tor O1” variant from South Asia. Given that the existence of this strain has never been documented in the Caribbean region or throughout Latin America, the evidence suggests that the Haitian epidemic began as a result of the introduction of a new strain from a distant geographic source. While the sequence analysis confirms a South Asian lineage, it does not identify the specific source of the Haitian strain or suggest how it may have arrived in the country.
What They Do: Pacific Biosciences’ mission is to transform the way humankind acquires, processes and interprets data from living systems through the design, development and commercialization of innovative tools for biological research.
A-Power Energy Generation Systems (Nasdaq: APWR) $4.86. The project is located in Baisha County Bangxi Industrial Park, where no other straw plant is within 50km of the proposed location and adequate space has been reserved for the development of this project.

PharmAthene (AMEX: PIP) $3.69. Announced Thursday that the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has provided formal consent for PharmAthene to reinitiate clinical testing of its anthrax anti-toxin, Valortim, after lifting the partial clinical hold placed on the program in late 2009.
"We're very pleased to resume clinical testing of Valortim," remarked Dr. Thomas Fuerst, Senior Vice President and Chief Scientific Officer. "The accumulating data suggest that Valortim may have unique characteristics, which could position it as a leading candidate for future procurement in the nation's biodefense stockpile. A presumed different mechanism of action, relative to other anthrax monoclonal antibodies and encouraging efficacy data in animal studies at low doses, suggest that Valortim® may offer important advantages in the treatment of symptomatic anthrax infection."
What They Do: PharmAthene was formed to meet the critical needs of the United States and its allies by developing and commercializing medical countermeasures against biological and chemical weapons.
