Heavy Floods in North and Central Vietnam Kill at least 49

At least 49 people have died in what is being called the worst flooding to hit the north and central Vietnam in nearly 20 years.

The deaths over the past week come as heavy rains continue to batter an already saturated land that has been hammered by rain for more than a month. Flooding has destroyed crops, submerged buildings, homes and schools and contaminated water supplies leaving residents with little.

Inside the capital city of Hanoi 18 people have died as more than 3 feet of water has forced people to wade through the streets searching for higher ground.

The Vietnamese government has mobilized soldiers to assist residents in reaching safety but more ran and flooding is expected over the next week.
