Barack Obama Names Top Economic Advisers

With less than two months before his inauguration President-elect Barack Obama has named his top economic advisers. Obama was speaking at a press conference from Chicago when he unveiled his new team.

Heading Obama’s list is Timothy Geithner who will be the next U.S. Treasury Secretary. Geithner currently serves as the president of the New York Federal Reserve and has served in senior roles with the Treasury and IMF. Obama said Geither would offer, “an unparalleled understanding of our current economic crisis, in all of its depth, complexity and urgency.”

Geither played a key role in instituting the bailout for AIG and Bear Sterns.

Obama also named Lawrence Summers as the new head of the White House national economic council and Christina Romer as the chair of the Council of Economic Advisers.

Summers served as former President Bill Clinton’s Treasury Secretary while Romer has been co-director at the National Bureau of Economic Research.

The director of the Domestic Policy Council will be Melody Barnes.

Solving the current economic crisis has been the main priority for Obama and was the driving force of his campaign for the presidency. He has remained consistent with his approach to solving that crisis, insisting on a need to create economic growth in the middle class to drive the economy.
