Putting Tournament Announces $10,000 in Prize Money for Winner

U.S. Putting Tour guarantees $10,000 to winner of its 2011Tour Championship in September

The U.S. Putting Tour announced today that it is guaranteeing $10,000 in prize money to the winner of its inaugural USPT Championship putting tournament, which takes place September 24-30, 2011 in Carlsbad, California.

The putting championship is open to professional and amateur golfers, including men and women. Anyone at least 13 years of age by September 24, 2011 is eligible to compete in the event.

"The $10,000 in guaranteed prize money for the winner should attract a wide range of golfers," said USPT President, Jim Hartley. " We expect interest from PGA club professionals, mini-tour players, any golfer who likes to compete for money, and amateurs who want to pit their putting skills against the pros."

Hartley explained that amateur golfers will compete for the title of America's Best Putter, the USPT Championship trophy and merchandise prizes in accordance with the USGA's rules on Amateur Status.

"Putting is the only level playing field in golf," Hartley said. "So anyone with some talent on the greens can walk away with the title in our putting championship."

Golfers can enter the USPT Championship directly at the U.S. Putting Tour website. Also, they can attempt to qualify in USPT qualifying putting tournaments that will be held throughout the U.S. and in other countries in the months leading up to the September championship.

The total prize purse will be determined based on the number of entries and sponsorship revenue. The putting tour is offering title sponsorship of the USPT Championship as a golf sponsorship opportunity to businesses looking to reach golfers through a national and grassroots platform.

The championship will be held at The Crossings at Carlsbad, a city-owned course in Carlsbad, which features ocean views from its clubhouse and large practice putting green where the putting competition will take place. The tournament consist of three rounds of putting with cuts being made after each round.
