Following
the failure to finalize a sale of the government’s stake in the troubled Fortis
bank to the French bank BNP Belgium’s Prime Minister Yves Leterme has proposed his
government resign, a move supported by the cabinet.
While
the government had pursued selling their stake in Fortis that sale was blocked
by Belgium’s highest court who ruled shareholders in the troubled bank should
have a say in the institution’s future.
On
Friday the Supreme Court expressed their belief that the government had attempted
to influence the earlier ruling which halted the sale of the government’s stake
in Fortis.
Following
the controversy and the new accusations Leterme suggested his government resign
and it will now be up to King Albert II to accept the resignation, something that
is certainly no guarantee.
