The
Vatican has ordered Bishop Richard Williamson to recant his past statements in
which he clearly denied the atrocities Jewish people were subjected to by Nazi
Germany during World War II.
Bishop
Williamson recently had his excommunication from the Catholic Church lifted but
the Vatican has insisted the Pope was unaware of his past statements regarding the
Holocaust prior to lifting the excommunication.
While
Bishop Williamson has acknowledged that several hundreds of thousands died in
concentration camps during World War II he has denied the use of gas chambers.
He had been excommunicated from the Roman Catholic Church nearly two decades ago
on unrelated matters.
Following
the controversy of Bishop Williamson’s return the Vatican issued a statement
saying, “Bishop Williamson, in order to be admitted to the Episcopal functions
of the Church, must in an absolutely unequivocal and public way distance
himself from his positions regarding the Shoah [Holocaust].”
Last
month the Pope lifted the excommunication of Bishop Williamson and three other
bishops who belong to the ultra-conservative Society of Pius X which has
refused to recognize the reforms made during Vatican II Council.
