Death Toll in China Flooding Rises to 105

The death toll from rain-triggered flooding and landslides in central and southern China has risen to 105, according to the state-run Xinhua news agency. The province of Hunan reported 39 deaths while Hubei reported 29, Guizhou reported 24 and Jiangxi reported 13. At least 60 people are missing.

Heavy rain is forecast to last the next several days. The Ministry of Civil Affairs has already ordered 11 provinces and 7 cities to prepare for the weather by setting up shelters, conducting safety inspirations and ordering evacuations.

The rain ended months of severe, crop-destroying drought in the area but has displaced hundreds of thousands of people. In Guizhou province alone about 270,000 people have been affected. At least 45,000 people were forced to leave their homes while thousands of others were left stranded.
