President
Barack Obama has urged members of Congress to approve the most recent drafting
of the economic stimulus plan put before them, saying the bill was “critical”
to putting the economy back on track and providing or protecting jobs for 3.5
million people.
The
most recent stimulus plan is now worth $789 billion and includes tax cuts as
well spending initiatives. Members of both the House and Senate reached a
compromise on different plans and settled on the most recent drafting but
Republicans in Congress have remained against the bill.
Obama
hasn’t backed down from his rhetoric that has stressed the importance of the economic
stimulus plan being approved. Speaking to members of the Business Council in
Washington the president stated, “We have a once-in-a-generation chance to act
boldly, and turn adversity into opportunity, and to use this crisis as a chance
to transform our economy for the twenty-first century.”
The
House is expected to vote on the latest version today and the Senate could
follow as Obama has aid he wanted the bill on his desk by the weekend.
