Tropical Storm Meari battered the Philippines this week, dumping heavy rain, causing flashfloods and triggering landslides. Officials say at least 11 people are missing and some 50,000 have been displaced. The missing includes 10 fishermen in three boats last located in the waters off Catanduanes province and a 54-year-old woman who was swept away in a river in Albay province.
The Civil Aviation Authority reported the cancellations of 30 international flights and 26 domestic flights due to the bad weather. Government buildings and schools have been closed.
Meari is expected to move away from the Philipines by Saturday. It is expected to hit Batanes Province before moving northeast towards Japan. Forecasters predict Meari will be about 229.9 miles west northwest of Okinawa by Sunday.
