Mexico Issues Hurricane Watch For East Coast
Mexican authorities issued a hurricane watch Wednesday as
Tropical Storm Arlene continued to travel toward the east coast. The watch,
which affects areas from Tuxpan to La Cruz, comes just one day after authorities
issued a tropical storm warning from Barra de Nautla to Bahia Algodones.
Arlene is projected to make landfall on the central
northeastern coast Thursday and is expected to produce heavy rain that could
cause flash floods and mudslides. Strong wind from the storm is forecast to
reach the coast on Wednesday.
As of Wednesday morning,
Arlene was 155 miles east southeast of Tampico. The storm was moving at about 8
mph with maximum sustained winds of 50 mph. Tropical Storm Arlene is the first
named storm of the 2011 Atlantic hurricane season.
