A 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck at 6:17 a.m. off the
coast of Tonga early Friday. No damages were reported. The quake sparked a
regional tsunami warning.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued the warning for
Tonga, Fiji, Niue, the Kermadecs, American Samoa, Samoa and Wallis-Fatuna. The center
also warned that Hawaii could experience “small non-destructive sea level
changes and strong or unusual currents.”
“There’s a tsunami in the water, but it’s not gonna do
much,” said geophysicist Robert Cessaro.
