Hurricane Irene Heads Towards Dominican Republic, Haiti
Hurricane Irene left downed trees and flooding in its
wake Monday morning as it moved away from Puerto Rico and continued on a
northwest path towards the Dominican Republic and Haiti. Puerto Rican
authorities have not reported any death or major injuries, but a state of
emergency was declared after the storm cut power to more than one million
people. Officials urged residents to remain in their homes and stay out of
flooded streets.
Forecasters expect Irene to make landfall in the
Dominican Republic by Monday afternoon. The National Hurricane Center put a hurricane
warning in to effect for the north coast of the country and a hurricane watch in
effect for certain areas of Haiti and the Bahamas. The center warned heavy rain
could cause flash floods and mudslides.
Hurricane Irene could reach Florida by Friday morning.
The storm is currently moving northwest at 14 mph with 80 mph winds.
