“Lowe’s Companies Inc. (NYSE: LOW) shares surged 9.32% midday today, trading at $20.17. The nation's second biggest home improvement chain recently said its first quarter was down 22%, but was better-than-expected as it cut prices on fewer items. … For the quarter ended May 1, 2009, the company's profit declined to $476 million, or 32 cents per share, down from $607 million, or 41 cents per share, a year ago. Sales for the quarter declined 1.5% to $11.8 billion, down from $12 billion in the first quarter of 2008. Comparable store sales for the first quarter declined 6.6%.”

According to the report, the new Prius combines superior environmental performance with improved driving pleasure. … Toyota expects to sell up to 400,000 units globally a year of the car as it faces a challenge from Honda Motor's Insight, which reportedly has sold briskly since it was introduced in Japan in February. Akihiko Otsuka, the new Prius’ chief engineer, said the company can increase domestic production of the new Prius at its four existing lines by adding night shifts, if necessary.”
