The New York-based bookseller recently announced its sales fell slightly less than expected in the first quarter ended May 2. Sales declined 4% to $1.11 billion, but topped Wall Street's average loss forecast of $1.08 billion. … Same store sales, a key indicator of forward or backward movement, dropped 5.7%, but that was better than the company's forecast for a same-store sales decline of 6% to 9%. … Following a better than expected performance during the first quarter, the company now expects fiscal year earnings of $1.10 to $1.40 per share, versus previous fiscal years earnings guidance 95 cents to $1.25 per share.”

Revenues in the quarter rose 0.6% year-over-year to $1.60 billion, but came in short of consensus estimates of $1.68 billion. … The current consensus earnings estimate is $2.25 per share for the year ending October 31, 2009.”
