Japan Braces For Typhoon Roke, Authorities Urge Evacuations

Japanese authorities urged more than 1 million residents of Nagoya to evacuate the city ahead of Typhoon Roke, which is expected to make landfall Wednesday. An estimated 60 people have heeded the evacuation warnings so far. Authorities expect more residents to leave as Roke advances.

Heavy rain battered Honshu Tuesday and sparked flooding in parts of Nagoya and surrounding areas. Officials fear additional rain that will come with Roke’s landfall will cause massive landslides and more flooding.

In Gifu prefecture, police said two people were missing and feared dead. They believe a 9-year-old boy in Tajimi and an 84-year-old man in Shirakawa were swept away in swollen rivers.

Typhoon Roke is currently packing winds of 115 mph.
