SAN FRANCISCO, June 9 (Reuters) - Microchip giant Intel Corp (INTC.O) ceded market share to arch-foe Advanced Micro Devices Inc (AMD.N) in the first quarter, after its smaller rival benefited from resilient demand for notebook chips, according to industry tracker iSuppli Corp.
Intel's market share declined 2.5 points to 79.1 percent from 81.6 percent in the fourth quarter of 2008. Industry second AMD gained 2.3 points for 12.8 percent of the global market, up from 10.5 percent the previous quarter.
AMD -- which analysts say competes partly by providing lower prices versus Intel -- rode demand for its laptop processors, while Intel's decline was spurred on by dwindling spending in the PC and server markets it dominates, the report said.
