Hurricane Jova Hits Mexico, Causes Flooding and Power Outages

The National Hurricane Center downgraded Hurricane Jova to a tropical storm early Wednesday as the system moved over western Mexico. Jova hit the coast as a Category 2 hurricane, bringing heavy rain and 100 mph winds.

The extent of damage remained unclear Wednesday, but so far it appears to be minor. Flooding has been reported in coastal towns and the nearby mountains. Widespread power outages and toppled trees have also been confirmed. There were no immediate reports of deaths. At least one person was injured.

As of 11 a.m. Wednesday morning, Tropical Storm Jova was moving past Puerto Vallarta at 6 mph. The National Hurricane Center expects the storm to become a tropical depression by Thursday.
